Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today we return to “Ordinary Time.” For the next four weeks, we will read the early ministry years of Jesus. The readings this weekend focus on the public revelation of Jesus’ identity and mission. In the first reading from Isaiah, we read how Isaiah speaks of God’s love for the people of Israel. This is written during the time period when the Israelites began returning to Jerusalem from their time in exile. The reading offers hope and promise of new life for the people. Also in the next few weeks, our second reading will be from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians. Paul remarks about the many gifts of the spirit and introduces the concept of unity in diversity. In the Gospel of John, we read about Jesus’ first miracle performed at the wedding feast of Cana as Jesus turned water into wine. This miracle or “sign” is only recorded in the Gospel of John. By water and the Holy Spirit, we are members of the church. We have different gifts but the same spirit. All gifts, great or small, are needed in the church.

Parish Share The 2015 Parish Share campaign will conclude in two weeks. Please remember to submit your contributions so we can reach our goal. Thank you for your support to this annual appeal. Parish Share helps run the day to day operations at the Diocese of Pittsburgh Offices downtown, helps educate our seminarians, funds chaplaincy programs at our high schools, colleges, hospitals, nursing homes and correction centers.
