DO NOT BE AFRAID!

Today we celebrate the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings focus on not having fear but having faith. In the First Reading from Jeremiah, we read how the prophet preaches that the Lord will guide and protect us. In the many hardships of life, God is there to help us. In the Second Reading from Paul to the Romans, we read how St. Paul reminds the Romans that Adam brought sin and death to the world but Jesus’ sacrificial act brought new life and a new creation. Jesus encourages his disciples to be bold and bring all secrets hidden in darkness into the light.

After more than three months of Lent and Easter, this weekend we return to Ordinary Time. This year we read from the Gospel of Matthew. This weekend we begin reading part of Matthew’s “Mission Discourse” which provides guidance to the disciples. In word and deed as disciples, we are sent to spread the Good News. Let us strive to openly proclaim the gospel message with joyful hearts. Let us not be afraid to testify our belief in Jesus.

DO NOT BE AFRAID!

Parish Improvements Work continues this week on renovating both the men’s and women’s restrooms in the Gathering Space. The only restrooms available are in the church (near the Ushers’ Room). Please be patient while the renovations are taking place. Because of the limited available bathrooms, both restrooms in the church are now for both men and women.

Improvements to our prayer garden along Walnut Street continue. The old trees and shrubs and mulch have been removed and a new drainage system has now been installed since new lighting along the sidewalks is currently being installed. New plants, shrubs and benches will be installed in the later part of the summer. A current list of donors is in this week’s bulletin. We thank all those who are helping make this project possible.

Donations continue to be accepted for the Prayer Path upgrades. If you would like to make a donation, please contact our Business Manager, Terri Price at (412)741-6650, extension 312 or email her at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Please make checks payable to St. James Catholic Parish and memo it “Prayer Path Upgrade Project.” We are currently looking into having donations applied towards engraved memorial bricks as a way to pave the Prayer Path in memory of or in honor of a loved one. Stay tuned for details regarding this endeavor.

Flat Roof Replacement Schulteis Roofing Inc. of Plum Boro will begin to replace the flat roof on the Gathering Space, school gym and connecting corridor that connects the school to the Gathering Space starting this week. Funds from Our Campaign for the Church Alive will cover the cost of the entire project.

On Mission For the Church Alive! The diocese is considering grouping St. James with St. Margaret Mary in Moon Township, St. Joseph in Coraopolis and St. Catherine of Siena in Crescent for the upcoming On Mission for the Church Alive process. This grouping is very encouraging since we already partner with our neighbors across the Sewickley Bridge with our Lenten and Advent Penance Services and all four parishes currently cover at Heritage Valley Sewickley Hospital during the weekdays. With our updated Parish Census taken last summer, currently twenty percent of St. James registered parishioners have a Coraopolis/Moon Township zip code.

Also our St. James Parish St. Vincent dePaul Society has recently took on covering the Coraopolis area for needy families and individuals since the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Joseph Parish is no longer active and our food pantry is now sharing food to restock the food pantry at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart High School in Moon Township.

Stay tuned for future updates in the parish bulletin and during my homilies about this very important process.
