Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

This weekend and for the next four Sundays we take a break from the Gospel of Mark to hear five passages from the “Bread of Life Discourse” in the Gospel of St. John. Today’s readings focus on feeding the hungry. God can work wonders with the little we have if we are willing to give it all. In the First Reading from the Book of Kings we read how Elisha, a prophet, becomes the source of life for the people. By God’s word, many are satisfied. The story emphasizes the abundance that results when faithful people offer all they have while trusting in God to make it sufficient to meet the need. In the Second Reading from Ephesians, Paul urges the Community to live in peace. In the Gospel of John we read how Jesus miraculously feeds 5,000 people with five barley loaves and two fish. This is a very popular story in the New Testament. In fact, all four Gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John write about the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes. It is the only miracle story of Jesus found in all four gospels.

As Catholics, the Eucharist is the center of our faith. Each time we come to Mass, we are “fed” with the Liturgy of the Word, and “fed” with the Liturgy of the Eucharist at Holy Communion. Let us be nourished with the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ to help us with our daily lives and bring Christ to those who are hungry, thirsty, or lack hope.

Parish Improvements The Diocesan Office of Property and Planning is assisting us in getting our main church roof replaced. We have recently hired Florida Consulting LLC to assist us with roofing contractors. Because most roofers are behind schedule with current projects due to the wet summer season, we will continue to evaluate the best way to do some “emergency patching” to the areas of the main church roof where it is leaking to get us through the fall and winter months, then plan for total roof replacement in the spring.

Ken Bitkowski Contracting LLC of Turtle Creek continues to conduct major renovations to the Rectory Offices. Please be patient with us during this time with phone calls and e-mails. We will do our best to keep the offices running as “normal as possible” during the renovations. Special thanks to a parishioner who has financially covered the complete cost of the rectory office renovations at no extra cost to the parish.
