Twentieth‐Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

It has been quite a week with Pope Francis visiting Washington D.C., New York, and Philadelphia. Every day this week, every major newspaper had front page coverage of the Pope’s visit and television and radio newscasts had daily reports. Pope Francis’ historic visit to America will be something we all will remember. Since Pope Francis was named the 266 Pope back in April of 2013, he has focused his ministry on reaching out to the outcast, the poor, and those who are often not loved or accepted by society.

We live in a world that if we don’t like someone, or have a misunderstanding, we just shut them out of our lives. It is so easy to get caught up in gossip and putting people down because they have different beliefs than we do.

This weekend, we celebrate the Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time. The readings this weekend focus on letting go of jealousy, hatred and judging others.

In the first reading from the Book of Numbers, we read how the Israelites become jealous of prophets. In the Gospel of St. Mark, Jesus responds to his disciples’ jealousy and misunderstanding. As Jesus makes his journey toward Jerusalem, the focus of his preaching and teaching shifts to his disciples. The readings seem “harsh” but help us to open up our minds and help us to know what we need to follow Jesus faithfully.

God calls all people to be part of the kingdom without making distinctions among groups, race, or nationality. Let us let go of negativity. Instead of complaining, give someone a compliment this week.
