Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A few years ago when I was Pastor at Good Shepherd Parish in Braddock, one of my Communion Calls was a parishioner named Ted who was blind. Every month Ted would look forward to my visit. We would sit in his living room and talk about his days working at the Edgar Thompson Steel Mill in Braddock and how he loved his faith and family. Despite later on in his life becoming blind, Ted saw Jesus each and every day and his deep faith helped him with his crosses in life.

This weekend we celebrate the Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time. Our readings focus on opening up our eyes to see the goodness of the Lord. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus heals the blind man Bartimaeus. Although Bartimaeus is physically blind, he can see perfectly well with his eyes of faith. He tells Jesus “Master, I want to see!” When Jesus gave him his sight, Bartimaeus’ faith increased to the point that he chose to follow Jesus on the road toward the cross and resurrection. The sight Bartimaeus received isn’t just physical vision, but the insight of faith that each of us receives with our call from and encounter with God. Faith and spiritual sight set Bartimaeus on a new path.

As we approach the last week of October and head into November, let us approach Jesus with our prayers and petitions. Let us be like Bartimaeus and open up our eyes and see the blessings that Jesus gives us each and every day!
