LET THE LENTEN JOURNEY BEGIN!

This past Wednesday, St. James Church was packed with people coming to get their ashes. There is something about getting ashes smudged on our forehead that draws us to church every year. We walk this journey together for the next six weeks focusing on prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

This weekend we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. The First reading from Genesis focuses on God making a covenant with Noah. After the flood there was great fear among the people. God gives comfort to the people. The Second Reading from First Peter recalls Christ’s death and resurrection. Good overcomes evil. In today’s Gospel of Mark, we read how the spirit drives Jesus out into the desert for forty days. This is the time of fulfillment; the kingdom of God is at hand. Jesus’ forty days in the desert was a time of intense focus on his relationship with God. The Lenten journey helps us to look inwardly to discover where the spirit of Christ is lacking in our life. It is a time of growth, change and a time to seek a fresh new direction.

Last weekend we celebrated “World Marriage Day” and honored the longest married couples at each Mass. Congratulations to the following “Sweethearts”- 5:00pm - Jerry & Lois Anne Huston - 55 years, 7:30am - Bob & Jean Brown - 64 years, 9:30am - Bruno & Josephine Toia - 66 years, and 11:30am - Lou & Pat Tarasi - 60 years!

LET THE LENTEN JOURNEY BEGIN!

Envisioning our Future: engaging with Jesus to Love and Serve It gives me great pleasure to announce the launching of our Pastoral Plan booklet this weekend. Members of our Pastoral Council have been hard at work the past few months putting together a three year pastoral plan with goals and objectives to continue to make St. James grow and minister the faith to God’s people. Our new plan incorporates goals and objectives over the next three years: 2015 - 2018. We invite you to read over the booklet that has been printed, and pray to discern an activity or a ministry that enables you to use your unique talents, special expertise, time and treasures to help advance the works of our parish.
