HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

This weekend we welcome all who worship with us as we celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday and Mother’s Day. It is a very special day to honor Mom!

My mom, Margaret Dvorsky Burke was raised by my Grandmother Mary Dvorsky who was a young widow with three young children and a newborn. My mom attended St. Stephen Elementary School in Hazelwood and St. John the Baptist High School in Lawrenceville. After graduating from High School she worked for the Diocese of Pittsburgh with Bishop Leonard and Bishop Bosco. After my dad returned from serving in the Navy, they married in 1962 and bought a house in Carrick.

My mom stayed at home to take care of her three children while my dad went to work for the Pittsburgh Police Department. Having only one car in the family, my mom would help get her three kids get ready for school every day. She stayed home until I was in middle school then she went to work at ALCOA then at Children’s Hospital. My mom taught me how to pray, read, clean, and showed me how to treat others with love and compassion. I am thankful every day for my mother.

This weekend we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Easter, “Good Shepherd Sunday.” The readings this weekend focus on God protecting us.

In the first reading Peter continues his testimony from last week of his Pentecost address, inviting the people to repent and be baptized. In the Second Reading Peter consoles those in his community who are suffering for their faith and reminds them of Christ’s suffering. In the gospel we read how Jesus says he is the true gate through which the sheep enter and will be protected and saved. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who cares for his sheep.

We often stray away on our own or push God out of our lives thinking we will do things “our way.” The Good Shepherd helps us find our way back on the right path and cares for us.

We are the only parish in the Diocese of Pittsburgh currently that participates in Notre Dame Vision.
