The Shepherd's Voice 05.17.15

This weekend we celebrate the Seventh Sunday of Easter. We are in the final weeks of the Easter Season. Next Sunday is Pentecost. The readings this weekend focus on prayer and sharing God’s love with others. In the First Reading of the Acts of the Apostles, Peter leads a community of believers and we see that Matthias is elected to replace Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus. Matthias accepts the challenge becomes a great follower. In the Second Reading of John, we are reminded that God is love. God shared that love completely with us by sending Jesus.

In the Gospel of John, we conclude reading Jesus’ “farewell discourse” at the Last Supper. This weekend’s passage is the beautiful “Priestly Prayer” as Jesus prays for his disciples asking God to protect them as they take over the work that Jesus has done while on this earth. Armed with the Father’s protection, Jesus sends them into the world. As we approach the final few weeks of the Easter Season, let us look at how we pray and how we can improve our communication with the Lord.

Parish Improvements Tudi Mechanical Company of McKees Rocks recently made some plumbing upgrades to some of the school restrooms and also repaired two broken pipes: one in the rectory garage and one in the back of the church near the confessional areas.

Our Usher’s recently completed a CPR Training Session and Basic Life Skills course taught by parishioner, Dr. Christopher Brackney.

A new defibrillator was purchased and installed in the Cafeteria. We have three total. The other two are located in the hallway between the Usher’s Room and restrooms in Church and the other one is in the gym near the locker rooms. Special thanks to the Frank and Ann Cahouet Foundation for making the purchase of the new defibrillator and updated accessories for the others possible.

First Holy Communion Congratulations to our Second Graders who are receiving their First Holy Communion this weekend. May the Eucharist nourish them and help them grow in their faith.

Wedding Bells Congratulations to Gloria Kelly and Joseph Wheat, Gina Nocito and Jeffrey Hutton, and Julie Gephard and Kelly Robinson who are celebrating their weddings this weekend. May God Bless them on their journey in life.

Welcome A special welcome to Erin, Clare, and Jack Price, and Kathleen Hudson who recently registered at St. James Parish.

Congratulations Congratulations to my nephew, Wyatt Burke Scheuler on receiving his Eagle Scout Award. For his project, Wyatt organized the construction and installation of twenty Blue Bird Houses for the North Park Nature Center. Wyatt and his fellow Scouts and friends had over two hundred service hours for the project. Wyatt is a Junior at City High Charter School in Downtown Pittsburgh and is a Member of Boy Scout Troop 329 at Memorial Park Presbyterian Church in McCandless. He is a graduate of St. Sebastian Elementary School in Ross Township and is a member of St. Sebastian’s. He is the son of Eric and Linda Burke Schueler of the North Side.

Something to Think About… Prayer is not the moment when God and humans are in relationship, for that is always. Prayer is taking initiative to intentionally respond to God’s presence. - L. Robert Keck
