Today is Pentecost Sunday, the “birthday of the church”! Pentecost is Greek meaning fifty days. Our readings today recall and celebrate all that the Holy Spirit has done for us and for the church. We receive the Holy Spirit at Baptism and also at Confirmation to guide us and give us strength.

In the First reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we read how the Holy Spirit empowers the Apostles to preach the gospel. In the Second reading from Paul’s Letter to the Corinthians, we read how the role of the spirit plays a role in our Christian life. The Spirit enables us to profess our faith in Jesus as Lord and life joyfully with others in the Body of Christ.

In today’s Gospel, the risen Lord grants his followers peace and inaugurates the mission of the Church. Jesus reassures his disciples that he is still with them and that it is not the end. He tells them “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

As we celebrate Pentecost, let us ask the Holy Spirit to come and fill us with love. The Spirit is there to assist as the church labors to witness to God’s truth, justice, peace, and love. Let us be aware of the value of that gift in our lives and be grateful for the gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgment, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, and Wonder and Awe.
