FOLLOW ME!

This weekend is a glorious weekend for the Church of Pittsburgh as Bishop David A. Zubik ordained four men to the Priesthood.

We congratulate the Class of 2014: Rev. Michael R. Ackerman- St. Pio Parish in Blawnox/Harmar, Rev. Michael P. Conway- St. Norbert Parish in Overbrook (my home parish), Rev. Kenneth W. Marlovits- St. Monica Parish- Beaver Falls, Chippewa Township, Darlington, and Rev. Thomas G. Schleuep, Jr.- St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Glenshaw. Let us pray for these newly ordained as they begin their ministry.

This weekend continue to “take a break” from Ordinary Time as we celebrate the Solemnity of Peter and Paul. The last time this Feast was celebrated on a Sunday was in 2008.This Solemnity invites us to consider how we might be called to sacrifice for our faith. Peter and Paul are remarkable models. Both had conversions but had different gifts and backgrounds, but they shared a passionate dedication to Jesus and the Gospel. Peter devoted his energies to serve mostly Jewish Christian communities, while Paul went out to evangelize gentiles. Both martyred in Rome in the first century.

In the First reading from the Acts of the Apostles, God protects Peter as he escapes jail and Herod. In the second reading from the Letter to Timothy, Paul faces death with courage.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus asks his disciples “who do people say that I am?” Simon Peter answers “you are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus declares that Peter is the rock upon which he built the church. As Peter confesses, Jesus commissions Peter: “you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church.”

As we conclude this month of June and prepare for Independence Day this coming week, let us be grateful for the gift of Faith and Freedom in this country and look at how Jesus is calling us to Come and Follow Him. Let us answer that call!
