It is amazing how each week our Saturday Farmers Market attracts many visitors from all over the area. Starting in April and running through late November the various vendors bring their fruits, vegetables, flowers and other items for shoppers to purchase. It is interesting to watch how the market starts out with a just a few vendors in early spring and then continues to grow throughout the summer. With an increase in vendors and t products, more people attend. Life is like that, we start out small, but as the years go on we grow.

This weekend we celebrate the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary time. The readings this weekend focus on how the Kingdom of God gives us strength. In the First Reading from the Book of Wisdom, we read how a wise man reflects on the power of God. God’s greatness leads to mercy and forgiveness. This reading which is actually a prayer, invites us to remember what God is like and how we strive to do good. In the second reading, St. Paul teaches Romans that the Holy Spirit helps in our weakness. God has planted his Spirit within us and this same Spirit can lead us to him. In the Gospel of Matthew, we read of the second of three weeks of Matthew’s “Parable Discourse.” We read the Parable of the Weeds and Wheat, the Mustard Seed, and the Yeast. All these parables focus on the Kingdom of God: “weeds and wheat”- imperfections of life are allowed for the sake of the faithful, “mustard seed” the growth of the Kingdom of God, and “yeast” how great things can start out small then grow. What a powerful effect the seed of the Word of God can have on our life if we allow it to grow in our lives! Let us take the time to think about the “seeds” that God has planted in our lives and how we continue to grow.
