Last week I experienced my very first “Elegant Junk Sale” sponsored by our Women’s Guild. I was truly amazed on how much “stuff” could fit in our school cafeteria and parish garage.

Boxes and boxes of household items, books, toys, small appliances, linens, jewelry, and holiday decorations filled the St. James School Cafeteria tables. In the rectory garages was furniture, bikes, tools and electronics. Last Saturday, people were beginning to form a line at 6:30am at the cafeteria doors off of Bank Street so they could get first pick of the “stuff”. Many people came and went and filled their paper bags with new treasures to take home. The remaining items that were unsold were packed up and taken to the St. Vincent de Paul Store in Coraopolis. Everything went to a good cause.

Today we celebrate the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The readings focus on seeing what is really important in life.

For the next three Sunday’s we will be reading Gospel from Luke Chapter 12. This week we read the Parable of the prosperous landowner. Jesus illustrates his teaching that the meaning of life cannot be found in the abundance of possessions. We naturally store up wealth to take care of our future. There is nothing wrong with proper financial planning. The issue of the Gospel is that we must look beyond the wealth, guard against sheer greed, and keep our eyes focused on what is really important in life, our faith in God. As we begin this new month of August, let us “downsize” with the things that cause us to distract us from prayer and peace. Let us let go, and Let God.

Hospitality Committee Since last fall we have seen many new people register to join our wonderful growing parish. In an effort to welcome our new members into our parish family we are organizing a new “Hospitality Committee.” This committee will provide a welcome reception a few times during the year and telephone our new parish family members to see if they have any needs. If you are interested in being part of the Hospitality Committee please contact Cindy Rinaldi at 412-779-8429 or Pat Etta at 412-741-1159.

New Parishioner Welcome A new parishioner Welcome Social will be held Saturday, September 28 after the 5:00pm Mass in the School Cafeteria.

Parish Share 2013 The Annual Parish Share Campaign is in full swing. A successful Parish Share collection helps our Diocese to function not only in service to St. James Parish, but all of the 200 parishes in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Our parish goal for 2013 is $175,210.00.

Parish Share is a very important campaign to help run the day to day operations at the diocese, helps with Catholic School scholarships, Campus Ministry programs, and other organizations.

Mission Cooperative Appeal 2013 Next weekend we welcome Brother Kevin Dalmasse of The Brothers of the Christian Schools who will speak at all of the Masses for the annual Diocesan Mission Cooperative Appeal. Please be as generous as possible.

Thank You Special thanks to the Women’s Guild and the men of our Parish for hosting our Annual Elegant Junk Sale last Saturday. There was a lot of good stuff for sale! A good time was had by all!

Congratulations Congratulations to Bob Brown for being selected as the 2013 National Slovak Society Fraternalist of the Year! His name will be placed on a plaque that will hang in the Home Office of NSS and a $500 donation has been made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society in his name. Bob is very active here at St. James Parish and in our Community.

Time Out We all need some time for refreshment and renewal during the year. I am currently taking my annual vacation to the Atlantic Coast this week. I will be out of the office thru Sunday, August 11. Please hold any e-mails and phone messages until I return; I will be unable to access any voicemail or e-mail. If you need assistance please contact Fr. Gruber at 412-741-6650 extension 312 or Office Manager, Karin Masterani at 412-741-6650 extension 310. Be sure of my thoughts and prayers as I travel.
