BE WATCHFUL!

We live in a very fast paced world: instant “News Alerts” on the television, cell phones, instant e-mail messages or texts. It is a quick way to communicate to our family and friends, receive up to the minute traffic and weather reports on the radio during morning and afternoon rush hour traffic, everything is right here and right now.

Today we begin a new season, a new calendar year in the Church as we begin Advent. The word Advent means a “coming” or “arrival.” It evokes a sense of the future and of expectation. Advent prepares us for Christmas. This Sunday is a chance to slow down and make a new beginning in our following of Christ as we anticipate the coming of the Lord.

All the readings this weekend focus on being ready and watchful. In the first reading of the prophet Isaiah, we read how repentant people address a prayer to God. They want to turn from their old ways of being sinful and wandering away from God to turning their hearts and minds to him. In the Second reading to the Corinthians, Paul’s greeting reminds us of all of God’s special blessings. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus tells his followers that they must wait patiently for the second coming of Christ by their faith each day.

This weekend’s readings concentrate on the Second Coming of Christ and the end of the world. We should not be afraid of the Lord’s coming, but await it with confidence, vigilance and prayer. Let us turn times of enforced waiting into opportunities for Advent-orientated prayer and reflections. If we feel rushed to decorate for Christmas, write Christmas Cards, shop and wrap gifts, attend work and holiday parties, concerts and pageants, and other commitments, let us stop, look and listen to be alert for the Lord’s coming.

BE WATCHFUL!
